Hythe Freemen 1705 - 1874
Among the Hythe Town records is a
collection of baptismal and marriage certificates supporting applications for
freedom of the town. These events are not restricted to Hythe: all parts of Kent
are represented, and there are many for London, Middlesex and other counties,
and even a few recorded overseas. They are an invaluable source for proving
family links and could take years off the search for an elusive ancestor.
Using information from these
certificates, a compiled register of freemen of 1832, memoranda of admission,
and the Common Assembly minutes, an alphabetical list has been drawn up of over
900 freemen admitted between 1705 and 1874. Also included are the names of those
whose applications were rejected, and others who were disenfranchised for
various reasons.
The amount of detail available for
each man varies and includes some or all of the following:
Date of admission
Residence
Occupation
By what right admitted
Place and date of own and wife's baptism
Place and date of own, parents' and wife's parents' marriage
Available on CD-ROM in .pdf format at £7.50 inclusive of P & P
(Overseas: please add £1.00)
DEFENCE OF THE
REALM INDEXES
Between 1791 and 1815
various measures were taken to defend Great Britain and Ireland against
the threat of invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte. The implementation of these
measures created pay lists of volunteer groups of men and other schedules
of names with information of value to the family historian. Transcriptions
and indexes of some of these records are being compiled by Jennifer
Killick.
Sea Fencibles and
Volunteers indexes are published
as an A5 booklet and on 3.5" disk
or CD-ROM. Please state which
format required and add appropriate postage to
your order.

KENT LIEUTENANCY PAPERS
SEA FENCIBLES
Bodies of Sea Fencibles,
under the command of Royal Naval Officers, were raised round the coast of
Great Britain and Ireland for defence against invasion. These volunteers
were drilled between one and four times a month, receiving a shilling a
day for each exercise attended. Their pay lists are held at The National
Archives (Series ADM 28) and provide a useful 'census' of men engaged in a
maritime occupation within a community. The indexes are arranged by county
and provide surname, forename, and place of exercise (which is usually the
volunteer's residence). Occasionally reasons for leaving are given, e.g.
pressed, gone to sea, drowned, imprisoned, which may lead to further
research in other records.

LIEUTENANCY
PAPERS
These records include
schedules of male inhabitants drawn up to comply with various Defence of
the Realm Acts. Copies of the returns were sent to County Lieutenants; in
Kent those surviving records are generally catalogued under
"Lieutenancy", hence the title of this series of transcriptions
and indexes. The Levee en Masse schedules of 1803 list all men resident in
the parish between the ages of 17 and 55, classifying them according to
their suitability for military service, and provides name and occupation.
The Army of Reserve schedules list all men resident in the parish and
provide name, occupation, and details of reason for exemption (which may
include infirmity, children under age 10, and previous service in the
Militia). Surviving militia ballot lists of period are also being
transcribed and indexed.
